Top Ten Monster Movies

Monster movies are basically movies which have monsters or unusual fantasized characters at their center. These monster movies are sure to scare you enough to make you look under the bed before you go to sleep every night.

1. Alien
This movie was released in 1979 and was massively marketed with the help of action figures, comic books and toys. One can say that “Alien” is the film that inspired the creation of some of the best monster movies we know of today. The cast was brilliant and the creature designed by H.R.Giger scared the audience out of their wits and looked like nothing one had ever seen before.

2. Creature
Released in 1985, “Creature” was filmed after “Alien” was a huge success. Therefore, while it is quite similar to the above mentioned movie, the “monster” elements are not as frightening and the story line is not as serious. In addition to that, even though the creature in this movie will not be as fondly remembered as the one in Alien, it is definitely a charming one, making this movie perfect for those who wish to spend the evening getting terrified.

3. Deep Rising
Deep Rising was released in 1998 and was directed by the man who created the famous mummy in the films “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns”. The monster in this movie lives underwater and enjoys consuming ships. Even though many people are killed in the process, the movie is slightly humorous- you will find yourself laughing for several minutes at scenes that are meant to be grim and action-packed.

4. Deep Star Six
This movie was released in 1989 and was directed by Sean S. Cunningham. The monsters in this movie live underwater as well and are said to belong to another era. These prehistoric monsters consume anything and anybody that stands in their way. Even though the cast is unknown, the monster is undoubtedly appealing for monster-lovers!

5. The Descent
The Descent was released in 2005 and the plot revolves around such monsters that reside underground and look like humanoid vampires. They attack six women who are unfortunately, locked underground and cannot find an exit. The movie is terrifying and nail-biting and will make you jump every time something movies in the darkness.

6. Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe
This movie is a remake of the one made in 1965 and is designed in a way that rivals the well-known Godzilla films. The script is excellent and the cast is extremely talented. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this movie allowed audiences all over the world to see Japanese kaiju films in a different light.

7. Gojira
Gojira was released in 1954 and would be remade as “Godzilla” in the future. This Japanese version is superb and set standards for movie-makers all over the world. It has been discussed by fans and scholars as it has a definitely political and social subtext. Gojira and Godzilla both are certainly the best monster movies ever made.

8. Leviathon
Leviathon was released in 1989 and borrows a few elements from successful movies like “Deep Star Six” and “Alien”. The monster’s characteristics are similar to “The Thing” created by John Carpenter.

9. Pitch Black
The monster in this movie released in 2000 emerges only when it realizes that its planet is in complete darkness. The creature is described to be berated and despised and makes the movie slightly action-oriented.

10. Predator
The monster in this movie likes to hunt humans for fun and will make you scream every now and then. Some military commandoes are targeted and thus, begins the hunt.
