Women are treated badly in developing countries, says Annie Lennox

Annie is well-known for her charity work, and this year she has visited developing countries such as Malawi in Africa, which made her realize there is still so much to be done in the realm of women's rights across the globe.

"My wake-up call came when I was visiting developing countries, where I saw women who weren't even near the bottom rung of the ladder and I realised women were being treated so badly and there were so many issues," Stuff.co.nz quoted her as telling British daytime television show This Morning.

"I do sometimes want time to myself but I am so motivated, I am so fortunate in my life. My children are more adult now and they are healthy. As a mother it is such a privilege to have healthy children and I feel so passionately about that and in my lifetime I want to help women move forward," she said.

Exercise keeps me sane

Kate Winslet has credited exercise with helping her to feel good about herself following her split from ex-husband Sam Mendes.

The actress - who divorced from the American Beauty director in 2010 after seven years of marriage - admitted that she engaged in more physical activity after becoming single in order to feel healthier for her two children.

"That's the main reason I took it up... But I do feel... I don't know... part of, I suppose, my way out of everything, has been really taking care of myself," she explained to Vogue.

"I think that comes from an awareness that my children really need me, and they need me to be the healthiest version of myself that I can possibly be."

Lindsay Lohan to sue jewellery store?

Lindsay Lohan is reportedly planning to sue the jewellery store that she allegedly stole a necklace from, after it released surveillance footage of the day in question.

TMZ reports that Kamofie & Company sold the distribution rights to the footage - showing Lohan looking at items in the shop - to the AP, which then arranged a deal with Entertainment Tonight to give exclusive rights to air the recording for seven days.

However, Lohan is said to be exploring her legal options, after claiming that the money made from the tape deal - rumoured to be around $40,000 (£24,750) - amounts to profiting from her image.

A representative for Kamofie & Company told the website: "We regret to hear there is trepidation by Miss Lohan in connection with the video.

"We hope that everyone understands that this is beyond our control; the flood of the requests to see this video were simply too overwhelming. It was truly necessary to put it out."

Lohan is currently facing felony grand theft charges over a necklace which the company claims the actress stole from the showroom. Lohan denies the accusation.

Since then, she has fired most of her staff and been counseled by Winfrey''s financial guru, Suze Ormond, about living within her means.

Matt Damon hits out at Barack Obama

Actor Matt Damon has criticised US President Barack Obama for failing to fulfil his promises.

Damon campaigned heavily for Obama to win the presidential elections in 2008, but now feels bad on his failure to fix the US economy and unemployment problem, reports contactmusic.com.

"I think he's rolled over to Wall Street completely. The economy has huge problems. We still have all these banks that are too big to fail. They're bigger and making more money than ever," he told The Independent.

"Unemployment at 10 percent? It's terrible... They had a chance that they don't have any more to stand up for things. They've probably squandered that at this point. They'll probably just make whatever deals they can to try and get elected again," he added.

The actor says he isn't happy with Obama's handling of education in the country.

"They have to get people who actually know about educating kids in positions of power. Now they're trying to get business people to come and manage schools like they're factories. It's not going to work," he said.

Rakhi accused of molesting a godman

Limelight moth Rakhi Sawant has now taken off on godmen and other saffron-clad religious individuals. In the course of her sojourn on a reality show in Delhi Rakhi who likes to be friendly with people from every walk of life, spread some extra warmth and sunshine on a Delhi-based godman Swami Aravind.

Apparently embrassed by the actress' PDA, the Swami accused Rakhi of “molesting” her.

Livid and somewhat rightly so, Rakhi lashes out, “People call me a publicity seeker. But in my experience those around me are far more publicity-hungry than I am. What can I say about this person, except that I am now used to people earning their bread at my expense.”

Rakhi takes off on the whole cult of godmen. “I think many of these self-declared godmen misuse the saffron robe. Hiding behind that attire they harbour all kinds of evil intentions.

We actresses are often accused of being cheap publicity-seekers. But at least we don't make spread poison in the garb of religion. We don't make a fool of the public. We are what we are.”

Rakhi's co-contestant on the reality-show is Veena Malik who is being labelled the Rakhi Sawant of Pakistan. Apparently there is no love lost between the two during the show and constant friction between them.

Rakhi turns surprisingly diplomatic over the issue. “We are not friends. But we are cordial with each other. If she is known as the Rakhi Sawant of Pakistan I'm happy for her. It isn't a small matter to be whom I am.”

“Finishing a lunch - now I want to sleep. @cash warren is ordering 4 desserts. What the hek do we do w him?” she wrote.

Jennifer Lopez premieres 'On The Floor' video on 'American Idol'

Actress-singer Jennifer Lopez made good use of her current, high profile judging gig at 'American Idol' - by premiering her new single, 'On the Floor', on the reality singing show.

The video for the four-minute club anthem is chocked full of crystal chandeliers, gilded go-go dancers and a silver bodysuit rocked by Lopez herself, reports the New York Daily News.

Since it's February release, 'On the Floor' has reached the number nine spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song's success comes after a string of bad news in recent years which some thought signaled Lopez' departure from the music business.

EU drops Hollywood studios probe

BRUSSELS: European regulators dropped a probe into deals done by major Hollywood film studios that it feared would stifle access to digital screens for low-budget European movies.

"I am pleased that Hollywood studios considered our legitimate concerns and modified the contracts so that cinema-goers can watch both Hollywood blockbusters but also small budget and art-house films with the latest state-of-the-art technology," said Joaquin Almunia, European Union competition commissioner.

"As the majors concerned have modified those contracts, all ends well, like in a good film," Almunia's spokeswoman added.

Almunia's office said that an antitrust investigation probing investment deals concluded during the switchover from film projection to digital cinemas had closed after the big producers changed the terms of contracts signed.

"Several major US Hollywood film studios revised contract provisions relating to the financing and installation of digital projection equipment in cinemas," the commission said in a statement.

"The changes proposed by major Hollywood film studios will make it easier for independent and art-house distributors to have access to cinemas equipped with digital equipment," it said.

Brussels said it is estimated that half of all European screens, more than 18,000, will be digital by the end of 2012.(AFP)

Bollywood bazaar

Lahore : Bollywood’s involvement with our local businesses be it films, music or fashion, has always been a contentious issue in the country. Any collaboration with professionals across the border is typically seen as a sellout at best and an unpatriotic act at worst. While Bollywood has largely remained a sore subject for our ailing film industry as the thug who steals precious screen space, it has now become a topic in many a household gatherings as the villain who is usurping billboard space for valuable ad campaigns.

When Firdous, a company that has been producing lawn for several years came into the limelight (quite literally) with its campaign last year with Bollywood’s reigning queen Kareena Kapoor, many eyes popped and mouths were left agape at the mere thought of how a Pakistani enterprise could land Bollywood’s crown jewel. While till last year, the industry and people at large were stunned by this coup, this year Firdous’ billboards with Deepika Padukone and debutante Crescent lawn’s ad’s with Sushmita Sen, have set tongues wagging. and on fire.

“I am totally against this using of Bollywood starlets to market our products,” said Shama, one of the millions lining up at a lawn exhibition. “We have such beautiful girls here like Shaista Wahidi and Nadia Hussain who look great on billboards, so what’s the need for getting Deepika Padukone?”. Perhaps with Kareena Kapoor last year, people felt that it was a onetime event — the shock value was enough to resonate with the masses for a very long time.

The fact that now, this gimmick has become a ‘trend’ is what disturbs many as yet another tactic of Indian supremacy.

New timers Crescent Lawn rebuke the critcism against Sen. They say, “We don’t believe in shooting stars, our theory is to use shining stars and Sushmita is currently the only Miss Universe in the sub-continent,” spoke Farhad Naveed, the COO of the group. Omer Saleem, the director of marketing and sales at Firdous, is indignant that his company is being censured so acerbically by all and sundry. “I have managed to sell in India, Malaysia and the UAE because of the Kareena Kapoor campaign. Believe me I didn’t do as much business in Pakistan as I did internationally,” stated Saleem. “This is business. I am not doing this for fun. The return of investment is far greater when we used an international celebrity like Kapoor”. He pointed out that nobody spoke to him about his lawn when they were using local models.

“Who knows our models abroad? Name one model or celebrity that people abroad can identify with,” Saleem asks challenges. And he is right. We have a severe dearth of stars, let alone stars that have global recognition and fame.

Naveed from Crescent says, “We have worked with local talent. Our last few campaigns had Iman Ali representing Stoneage. Since we don’t have much female talent in Pakistan, plus, whoever was available was being used by other lawn brands so we opted for Sushmita Sen as an eastern iconic face people can relate to.”

While fashion industry insiders also condemn the Bollywood move, PR professional Selina Rashid holds a pragmatic view. “These ads are to attract a certain demographic that we do not fall into. Such ads have massive recall and aspirational value.” If they did not, it wouldn’t be a point of contention to begin with. Yet someone like Saleem is quite irate with the way things have turned ugly: “There is no law against using Bollywood actors in ads so how can they ask me to pull down my billboards! I have spent hard earned money on these campaigns. If India is so hated then we should stop all kinds of international trade starting from multinationals. Stop drinking Pepsi and Coke, then if you want to promote local Colas. Ban all international products then,” he says.

The ‘we should promote our own talent’ slogan is a double sided dagger, a handful of media savvy talent exists in the country in the first place and they too do not have the kind of status to lure in foreign trade. Secondly, instead of being threatened and on the defensive, one should become strong enough to compete with international talent.

It is time to stop the endless cribbing and as one gentleman Asghar concludes the lawn war debate. “We should promote our talent to that level where it is at par and even beyond international talent. We should not grow by obstructing other’s growth.”
The Crescent lawn exhibit opens today, only time will tell how much lawn the ex-Miss Universe sells.

The Adjustment Bureau

The Adjustment Bureau is an enjoyable piece of hokum – your basic doom-laden parable of metaphysical sci-fi mind control, only with a surprise romantic sparkle. It's based on a 1954 short story by Philip K. Dick (called ''Adjustment Team''), but even as the film gives you a taste of Dick's crazy-visionary the corporation ate my brain! paranoia, it infuses that twisty gloom with a spirit that's lighter and almost playful. It's like Philip K. Dick meets Sliding Doors.

Matt Damon, beefy and gregarious, has just the right expansive yet guarded charisma to play David Norris, an on-the-rise political star who gets derailed (because of his not-quite-tamed frat-house side) in his bid to be a New York senator. In a luxe hotel men's room, just before his concession speech, he meets Elise, a free spirit and professional dancer who had ducked into one of the stalls. She's played by Emily Blunt, and in the
extended scene that follows, she and Damon, jousting and then kissing, generate the rare connection that actually feels spontaneous.

Blunt, who has the big-eyed, straight-haired beauty of a '60s swinging-London model, is a magnificent flirt, with smiles that aren't just come-ons but an intriguingly telegraphed series of wishes and promises. And Damon makes David not only smitten but shocked, as if love had slapped him awake. Their bond grounds the entire movie. Because a little
later, when David, now with a corporate job, wanders into an office he wasn't supposed to enter, he sees that everyone in the office has literally been frozen. And is being worked on. By men in fedoras and dark suits (led, in an ideal casting touch, by Mad Men's John Slattery) who look like '50s FBI agents as reimagined by Kafka. From that moment on, David's dream of love may not be an option.

Who are these American fascist Mad Men? I don't want to give away too much, but let's say two things: They control…a lot. And though creepy and sinister and all that, they're not nearly as black-and-white evil as you first think. The Adjustment Bureau is the thriller as glorified philosophical videogame, with David dashing through doors that are like looking-glass passageways, trying to wrench his destiny away from the forces that claim he has no free will. In many ways, this is a dated and rather gimmicky movie. Yet it's directed (by The Bourne Ultimatum's coscreenwriter George Nolfi) with a wide-eyed spirit. It taps into your longing for the days when a sci-fi matrix could explain the world without making it a darker place.

Priyanka Chopra's 'ex-boyfriends attend same party'

Shahid Kapoor and Harman Baweja are said to have avoided each other at a recent birthday party in Mumbai.

The actors, who have both been linked to former Miss World Priyanka Chopra, are said to have once been close friends, Mumbai Mirror reports.

A source told the tabloid: "Almost everybody was looking at them to see their reactions towards each other. One kept wondering if they would get into a conversation and, if so, what would transpire consequently."

Baweja, who appeared with Chopra in his debut film Love Story 2050, and What's Your Raashee?, recently commented on the star's developing relationship with her Kaminey co-star.

"It was hard to see her talk on the phone and text. I knew what was happening," said Baweja. "I just didn't want to see Kaminey.

"I thought I would be okay, but as the day kept coming nearer, it was all around and therefore harder to bear. I just booked tickets and left the country."

I will never wear a bikini on screen

Kareena Kapoor has reiterated that she will never wear a bikini on screen again.

The 3 Idiots actress will next be seen in the upcoming Bodyguard opposite Salman Khan.

Speaking to the Times of India, she said: "I don't have the patience to go through the whole regimen that needs to be in place for your body to look bikini-perfect.

"So I've decided that I will not wear a bikini on screen again."

However, she added her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan found her "very hot" in a two-piece.

Kapoor last wore a two-piece in Tashan and Kambakkht Ishq.

Padukone and Mallya become official?

Deepika Padukone and Siddharth Mallya have been outed as a couple by England cricketer Kevin Pietersen.

He told followers: "Just had a lovely lunch with Sidhartha Mallya & his girlfriend Deepika Padukone. Thanks for picking up the bill Deepika.. NOT!! Haha."

Both Padukone and Mallya, the son of a billionaire Indian industrialist, have consistently denied rumours that they are dating despite being seen publicly together at most social events.

The Om Shanti Om actress broke up with her long-term boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor in 2009.

Leonardo DiCaprio to make Bollywood film debut'

Shah Rukh Khan has reportedly signed Leonardo DiCaprio for his upcoming crossover project.

DiCaprio has been linked to the Indo-US production Xtreme City, along with Martin Scorsese, who is said to be producing the film.

Screenwriter Mushtaq Shiekh confirmed the casting to Hindustan Times, saying: "It's true. We are all elated. This is the best news I have heard in a long time."

The tabloid reports that the three stars discussed the possibility of working together when they met in Germany.

"The sheer logistics of merging two great filmmaking cultures seemed overwhelming, until a secret meeting took place on February 12 at last year's Berlin Film Festival," a source revealed.

Filming on the movie will commence in 2012 at the earliest.

Zinta makes complaint about paparazzi

Preity Zinta has made a complaint about the behaviour of the media, during her visit to a Sai Baba temple.

The actress, who was on a private visit to the pilgrimage site 300km outside Mumbai, said that her trip was spoiled by the media.

The Kal Ho Naa Ho star posted on her Twitter page: "Good morning. Went to Shirdi yesterday and came back with memories of media pushing me instead of the serene face & energy of Sai Baba (sic)."

Zinta, who was awarded an honorary degree from the University of East London last year, expressed her anger in a number of posts on the social networking site.

"In front of God we bare ourselves and look to purify our soul. Instead of feeling uplifted I came back feeling sad and deprived from Shirdi."

Actor Himesh Reshammiya caused controversy when he visited a religious site in Ajmer hidden beneath a burqa.

Mallika Sherawat on the make in Hollywood'

Mallika Sherawat is currently "on the make" in Hollywood, according to Indian acquaintances.

The actress recently made her US debut in the horror film Hisss, helmed by Jennifer Lynch.

Mahesh Bhatt, who cast the actress in Murder, told Mumbai Mirror: "She has that Indian quality that attracts foreigners. They find her exotic. I met her when she was promoting her last film Hisss and I just knew that she was on the make."

Sherawat made an appearance at the Oscars, along with fellow Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan.

At the after-party, the former model tweeted followers that Scarlett Johansson was "supacool".

Take Me Home Tonight

There are deep-dish '80s nostalgia movies, like Adventureland and Hot Tub Time Machine. Then there's Take Me Home Tonight, which duplicates the car crashes, drug jokes, all-night-long plot twists, and robot hip-hop dance moves of low-rent '80s party flicks with such casual fidelity that you may ask: Why not just watch Losin' It, Bachelor Party, or License to Drive instead? I can't claim that Take Me Home Tonight, set in the summer of 1988, is much better than – or different from – the real (cheesy) thing, but it does possess a certain backward-glancing innocent appeal.

Topher Grace, as an MIT grad who has become the world's most overqualified L.A. video-store clerk, looks longer and leaner than before, and he's got a new confidence, too. He spends the film crashing beer bashes and pretending to be a big deal at Goldman Sachs, all to woo Teresa Palmer, who's like Kristen Stewart minus the storm-cloud moodiness. The more he lies, the faster he talks, but that's his rite of passage. (Any wuss can be sincere.) He also has to look after his pudgy-loser-sidekick buddy, played by Dan Fogler, who bounces off the walls like Jack Black and also evokes the smarmy-cute Curtis Armstrong from Risky Business. It gives you a jolt to recall, in this age of geek chic, that being unhip was once truly unhip.

Sonam Kapoor 'stops wearing Galliano'

Sonam Kapoor has announced that she will not wear clothes by controversial former Christian Dior designer John Galliano.

The actress, who played a fashionista in last year's Aisha, is upset by the designer's alleged anti-Semitic statements in Paris earlier this week.

A source told Mid Day: "She is extremely fashion conscious and loves wearing the brand's outfits, especially those designed by Galliano. For Aisha, a majority of Sonam's outfits and accessories came from the designer label.

"She even possesses a few outfits from the fashion house. But she could never condone anti-Semitic statements, no matter how much she loves the designer."

The Bollywood star joins figures such as Natalie Portman in condemning Galliano's widely-publicised comments.

Lady GaGa makes catwalk debut in Paris

Lady GaGa has made her catwalk debut at Paris Fashion Week.

The 'Born This Way' singer made her appearance on the runway halfway through Mugler's womenswear fashion show, held at a gym on Wednesday.

The star, who arrived on the catwalk sporting pigtails, smoking a cigarette and dressed in a black ensemble, was modelling fashion from the autumn/winter 2011 collection, created by her stylist Nicola Formichetti.

She had earlier told fans about the appearance, writing on her Twitter account: "I''m so excited I might give birth to a machine gun."

GaGa, who directed the show music, also took the opportunity to preview her new song 'Government Hooker', taken from her upcoming album Born This Way, which is scheduled for release this May.

Formichetti is a member of the singer's Haus Of GaGa collective.

Lizards and light dance in `Rango'

LOS ANGELES: It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, where "the drugs began to take hold" in the Johnny Depp adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

In the manic, animated "Rango," which stars Depp as a chameleon, our coordinates are similar, and the hallucinogens are well under way. It's as though the drug-conjured lizards of "Fear and Loathing" have been contracted by Hollywood and tasked to make a Western.

Go West, young reptile.

But "Rango" proceeds from a presumably more sober place: the mind of director Gore Verbinski, who helmed the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy. It's his first animated film, but if you recall Depp's Jack Sparrow, you'll note that Verbinski is well acquainted with cartoon. "Rango" is also a first animated feature for the effects house Industrial Light & Magic.

Together, they've created perhaps the most cinematic animated film since Pixar's "Ratatouille." As a slapstick comedy, it doesn't have the emotion resonance of a Pixar film, but it's a visually stunning, endlessly inventive, completely madcap Western, made with obvious love for the genre.

"Rango" begins as movies should: with a Mariachi band of musical owls. Our narrators, they introduce the film and our hero, an early hint at the self-consciousness pervading the wink-filled "Rango."

We find our chameleon protagonist in full theatrical flight, turning his pet lizard tank into a film set, with supporting roles played by an inanimate fish toy and a palm tree: "Acting is reacting," he knowingly professes to no one.

With a wide, flat Don Rickles mouth and two giant bowl-shaped eyes, Rango, clad in a red Hawaiian shirt, doesn't look like your normal animated hero. We quickly learn that he's a precocious young actor whose life cooped up as a pet has habituated his imagination to flights of fancy. He is badly in need of an audience.

Rango is bounced out of his cage by a bump in the road and - in a beautifully done scene - tossed from the back seat of his unseen owners onto a Mojave Desert road, where he comes careening to a stop atop a broken piece of glass.

Spurred by an "enlightenment"-seeking armadillo (Alfred Molina), he sets out on a journey of self-discovery that includes momentarily landing on the windshield of the "Fear and Loathing" convertible, with Depp's former character inside.

Rango winds up in the old, rickety desert town of Dirt. Despite a resume that includes, as he claims, two one-acts and a working musical, Rango - less a chameleon of color than of character - dons the role of gunslinger so that he might impress the townspeople.

Inside a saloon, he claims with great bravado that he comes from the West, "beyond the sunset," and vanquished seven with a single bullet. Rango's dialogue, from John Logan's witty screenplay, is thoroughly Deppian in its verbosity. Rango boasts of eating men like the menacing Gila monster Bad Bill (Ray Winstone) for breakfast, adding: "Then we braise him in clarified butter."

Rango is convincing enough that he's made sheriff of Dirt. It's a town teaming with ragged curiosities: a drunk rabbit (Stephen Root), a slinky fox (Claudia Black), a wide-eyed and cynical mouse (Abigail Breslin), the prairie dog Balthazar (Harry Dean Stanton). There's also the potential love interest lizard named Beans (Isla Fisher).

Dirt's problem is water. Its dwindling supply is kept in a large jug in a bank's vault. The town's tortoise mayor (Ned Beatty) tells Rango: "You control the water, you control the desert."

With folksy villainy and a creaky wheelchair, the mayor is a perfect stand-in for John Huston's Noah Cross of "Chinatown." That film supplies the frame for much of "Rango," though only to a point. Incest is tabled and no nosey fellows get their nostrils sliced, but solving the mystery of the missing water is Rango's mission.

He seems no better equipped than Jake Gittes to solve what he deems Dirt's "aquatic conundrum." (His advice to one little creature: "Burn everything but Shakespeare.") But Rango is a method actor, and he eventually becomes the part.

As smart as "Rango" is, what most stands out is its simulation of light. With the great cinematographer Roger Deakins serving as a visual consultant and visual effects headed by Mark McCreery, the refraction of light in "Rango" may be the pinnacle yet in animation.

Shadows fall through the saloon - with glowing amber glasses of whiskey (or "cactus juice") - so authentically designed that one swears the room full of gun-totting varmints is real. Wisps of dust swirl across the road's cracked pavement.

Like Wes Anderson's entry to animation, "Fantastic Mr. Fox," Verbinski has brought live-action tools to an animated medium. The results in "Rango" are so lively that the post-movie conversation will go some time before any moviegoer remembers that 3-D was (thankfully) omitted.

The movie's postmodernism could be considered too cloying, but it comes off charming, especially because it pulls from such great sources. The Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone are joyfully referenced, complete with a cameo from the Man With No Name (voiced by Timothy Olyphant, not Clint Eastwood). Hans Zimmer's score is a playful ode to those of Ennio Morricone. (AP)

Kylie Minogue bringing her most lavish stage production yet to Australia

Kylie Minogue is all set to bring her most lavish stage production yet to Australia.

The Aphrodite Les Folies tour starts in Brisbane at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on June 3, her first local show in five years.

The 25-million-dollar production features a cast of 25 including 10 dancers and eight aerial acrobats and 30 water jets and fountains.

Michael Gudinski has been promoting Minogue tours for more than 20 years but says her fans have never seen anything on this scale.

"I''ve just seen the show in Europe and it''s phenomenal," the Courier Mail quoted Gudinski as saying.

"She . . . is bringing every screw and bolt of this show to Australia,” Gudinski added.

Unlike previous tours, the breast cancer survivor plays the two-hour concert without an interval. Top ticket price for the concert is 400 dollars to enter a "splash zone" within the stage itself. Other tickets are 150 dollars, 130 dollars and 100 dollars.

Cannes to screen documentary on Indian cinema

A documentary on Indian cinema will be showcased at the Cannes International Film Festival in May as part of its celebration of international movies, says megastar Amitabh Bachchan who features in the narrative.

The Cannes film fest will be held May 11-22.

"The makers as of now consist of Mr Rakeysh Mehra of 'Delhi 6', and 'Rang De Basanti' fame and Mr Shekhar Kapur of 'Bandit Queen' and 'Elizabeth' fame, among several other associations these gentlemen have in their contributions to this marvel of the 20th Century, moving pictures!" he added.

Amitabh will be required to share his insights about the Indian film industry, which is about more than 120-years-old and is said to be one of the largest film producing nations in the world. It churns out about 1,000 movies every year.

But the 68-year-old says he finds it strange to be asked to express his views.

"I often wonder why is it that they consider my offices to be of any value, as far as expressing knowledge of Indian Cinema is concerned? It is a disposition that I have often felt and expressed with great forthrightness, in many forums both private and public.

"That just because one is fortunate enough to be decorated with the tag of a celebrity, through whatever mean of business - an elegant model, a composite artist, a musician, painter or writer - does not necessarily give him or her the license to express views and opinions on how the world runs, for public consumption," posted the actor, who has been in the film industry for over four decades.

Oscar-Nominated Short Films 2011: Animated

There are no handy publicity campaigns to introduce you to the five live-action shorts and five animated shorts nominated for Oscars, but I can help. Here's what's in the running — and which are my favorites. Then it's your turn to take a look — in theaters, on demand, or on iTunes — and pick your own. (As for Oscar odds, you're asking the wrong bookie.)

I'd give the Oscar for Best Animated Short to the gorgeous, infinitely inventive Madagascar, Carnet de Voyage by Bastien Dubois — a vivid travel scrapbook that's an artful riot of drawing styles. But I wouldn't mind sharing a little love with the Australian fantasy The Lost Thing, based on a book by Shaun Tan about a boy who finds a...thing. Let's Pollute, a satire of our wasteful society by Geefwee Boedoe, goes for a swingin' faux-retro look to get the irony in the title across. Uncoupled from its place as a Pixar short before Toy Story 3, Teddy Newton's Day & Night is a friendly, bland lesson in appreciating people different as, oh, you know, night and day. As for The Gruffalo, well, it's got some fun movie-star voices in the mix, including Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, John Hurt, and Tom Wilkinson. But it's still a dippy story (from a kids' book by Julia Donaldson) about a brave mouse in the forest. Feel free to disagree. Animated shorts

Strings to release sociopolitical song ‘Main To Dekhoon Ga’

String is dealing with social issues. Strings has prepared another sociopolitical song, “Main To Dekhoon Ga, Tum Bhi Dekho Gay“, after giving strong and hard-hitting sociopolitcal songs like Beirut (2006) and Ab Khud Kuch Karna Paray Ga (2010), which is scheduled to air next week, reports Daily Express.

While Bilal Maqsood has rendered its lyrics and compositions, Faisal Kapadia have sung the song, the video of which is meant to engage audiences. This will be Strings’ third song based on the sociopolitical subject.

Let’s take a peek at a few notable sociopolitical songs of Pakistan.

Vital Signs: Aisa Na Ho The little known and criminally underrated but thumping and hard-hitting Aisa Na Ho by Vital Signs was released in 1992. The song rued the loss of hope that the nation had gathered with the assassination of Zia-ul-Haq and the coming of democracy, and then squandered it by the time this song was made. Vital Signs also made social statements with their two highly predictable pop anthems, Dil Dil Pakistan and Hum Jeetain Ge.

Jazba: Jago The song which was released in 1993 by Jazba, celebrated the Kashmir uprising. There is a great irony in this bass-heavy, sombre hip-hop gem.

Junoon: Talaash Released in 1993, Talaash continues to be one of the most powerful local rock chestnuts, kicking in with great anger, passion and with a highly affective tirade against “slave mentality” and cynicism.

Junoon: Eitesaab Junoon were the most apt bunch of players when it came to commenting on the state of the country. However, they seemed to have botched the plot with Eitesaab which was released in 1996, spoiling their own revolution by falling prey to the time’s overwhelmingly right-wing tedium about “political accountability.” Noble intentions perhaps.

Strings: Beirut The song which was released in 2006 by Strings, was made about the 2003 war in Lebanon. The song was far more hard-hitting; it described the effects of war on civilians. There was a clear message that provided awareness to viewers who may not know how the war machine works.

Azal: Duniya Ki Aisi Taisi Released in 2008, Duniya Ki Aisi Taisi by Azal became an instant hit. The song takes on a emotionless and appeals a more forceful attitude towards life.

Various Artists: Yeh Hum Nahin Released in 2008, for the first time so many Pakistani Pop musicians managed to override fear on the issue of terrorism.

Atif Aslam: Humain Kya Hua The live track was released in 2009 as part of the second season of Coke Studio. Humain Kya Hua by Atif Aslam has a distinct patriotic flavour. Written and composed by Atif Aslam, this song challenges our consciences, questions apathy and aims to incite unity. Humain Kkya Hua is a rousing wake-up call, both musical and lyrical.

Strings & Atif Aslam: Ab Khud Kuch Karna Paray Ga Released in 2010, the song was a wake call for the youth of Pakistan that enough is enough. The message was positive and strong. In the middle of Ab Khud Kuch Karna Paray Ga, Faisal Kapadia croons, “Yeh kahani hui purani, kitnay logon ki suni zubaani.” (This tale has become old and has been heard by many) to which Atif responds, “…is kahani ko ab tum ko badalna paray ga” (now you will have to change this story).

Entity Paradigm [eP]: Shor Macha Released in 2010, this single is deemed upon as heavily patriotic and immensely provoking one, while making the audience to cogitate over various issues and relating our radiant antiquity, gloomy present and a gleaming future subsequent. EP who stood for a revolution and stood against the tide is now making a Politically themed song, their second track after the band’s comeback in 2009.

Ali Azmat: Bum Pata Released in 2011, Bum Pata by Ali Azmat is a funny song and a slap on the Government of Pakistan. It has a brilliant music arrangement by the band, particularly the bass, drums, guitar, and the enticing lyrics which are positive and true, portraying the factual of Pakistan.
