Top 10 Bollywood films that go down in history

The Hindi Film Industry also known as Bollywood, is based in Mumbai, India and is one of the largest commercial industries in the country today. It has been around for over 100 years and is doing immensely well, with over 700 movies being released every year. This article looks at the top 10 Bollywood movies that will go down in history.

1. Sholay
Sholay was directed by Ramesh Sippy and released in 1975. The cast includes legendary actors like Amitabh Bachan, Jaya Bachan, Hema Malini and Dharmendra. Sholay is the biggest Bollywood film in terms of both its popularity and the amount of money it still continues to make.
2. Mughal-e-Azam
Mughal-e-Azam was directed by K.Asif and came out in 1960. The budget of the movie was very high at the time and the sets were so complicated, that it took over 15 years to make the film. It was said to be the best film created by Indian cinema till Sholay hit the theatres.
3. Mother India
This film starred the likes of Sunil Dutt, Nargis and Rajendra Kumar. Directed by Mehboob Khan, it won the hearts of many in the country and is a must-watch for those who need a good cry!

4. Guide
Guide released in 1965 and was produced by the legendary actor Dev Anand who was also part of the star cast. It was based on a novel with the same name by R.K. Narayan and was among the few Hindi films that had the privilege of being a part of the Cannes Film Festival.
5. Awara
This film was directed by Raj Kapoor was released in 1951. It was a part of a few nomination during the Cannes Film Festival 2 years later and is doted on by people all over the world.

6. Ankur
This film’s plot is inspired from a true story and stars the beautiful Shabana Azmi. Directed by Shyam Benegal, it gave significance to a genre called Indian Parallel Cinema and raised the bar for contemporary directors in the country. It has won a total of forty three awards and been nominated for several international awards.
7. Hum Aapke Hai Kaun
This film is rather long but the plot is endearing and the target audience at the time was the ‘typical Indian family’. The music is brilliant and can be heard in Indian households all over the world even today. It is a must-watch solely because it stars actors like Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan.
8. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
This film released in 1995 and starred the legendary Shahrukh Khan and the gorgeous actress Kajol. The plot of the film revolves around two teenagers who meet during a trip to Switzerland and fall in love. Raj, played by Shahrukh Khan then travels halfway across the world to stop her wedding and the win her family’s affection. The film will capture your heart and stay in your mind long after the credits stop rolling.
9. Lagaan
Lagaan starred Aamir Khan and was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film was inspiring and its brilliance was recognized when it was nominated for an Oscar. The music was composed by the astounding singer and composer A. R. Rahman.

10. Deewar
Deewar released in 1975 and starred Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachan and the stunning Parveen Babi. The music of the film contributed to its success and was composed by R.D. Burmna, the extraordinary music director. It won several Filmfare Awards and was nominated for many others
